He was born in Drama in 1946. He studied painting under Nikos Nikolaou and Yiannis Moralis, and mosaic under Eleni Voila at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1964-1969) on a State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) grant. He continued his studies in painting under Gustave Singier, mosaic under Riccardo Licata and lithography under Hubert Haddad at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris (1972-1979). He presented his first solo exhibition in 1981 (Ora Gallery, Athens).
His painting is mainly anthropocentric, with emphasis on large figures, often female nudes, which fill almost the entire painting space. He distinguishes forms in space by drawing rough outlines, projecting their expressionist dimension with subtle distortions in anatomy. Along the same expressionist lines are the dynamic strokes inside the shapes and the somewhat limited use of colour. Many of his works are presented in the form of installations, accompanied by sound and voice clips, which the artist himself composes.
Alongside painting, he has systematically engaged in sculpture and mosaic, creating works of large dimensions in Athens and Paris. In 1989 he created a series of stamps entitled Greece-Country of Olympic Games.
He started to teach as a lecturer at the Preparatory Studio of ASFA in 1982, and in 1984 he was elected professor. He has also served as the School’s Dean (2006-2010).
He has presented his work in numerous solo shows in Athens and other Greek cities and has participated in many group shows in Greece and abroad. In 1983 he participated in the 17th Sao Paulo Biennale, and in 2003 he participated at the Drama Short Film Festival.
He lives and works in Athens.
