She was born on Corfu. She studied French Literature at the University of Athens (1981). She continued her studies at the Sorbonne (Paris I and Paris IV), and did postgraduate studies in Modern-Greek Literature and in Art History and Aesthetics. Moreover, she studied Museology at the École du Louvre. Since 2006, she holds a PhD in History of Art (University of Athens).
She has worked as a Special Advisor for the European Cultural Center of Delphi (1988-1992). In 1992 she started working as a Curator at the J. F. Costopoulos Foundation (Artistic Director since 2007), and also as the Curator of Alpha Bank’s Art Collection in Athens. In 2008, she became President of the Board at the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki.
She has organized or curated numerous art exhibitions, whether solos, group, retrospectives or thematic ones. She was the Greek Commissioner of the 23rd Sao Paulo Biennale (1996) and the 51st Venice Biennale (2005). She was also the Director of the 3rd Biennale of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki (2011).
She has written many articles for Greek and foreign newspapers and art journals. She has also written essays and texts for books and exhibition catalogues. She often participates in various art-related conferences and debates, and gives lectures in universities and cultural institutions. She is a member of ICOM and of AICA Hellas.
She was Artistic Advisor for the Olympic Games/Athens 2004 Organizing Committee from 2000-2004. Since 2008, she has been a member of the Athens Metro Artistic Committee, as well.
She has been awarded the title Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia for the totality of her work (2012).
