Marangou Maria ()

She was born in Rethymno, Crete. She studied journalism and italian literature in Greece and history of art in Florence, Italy.
At first she worked as editor and translator of scientific texts in art magazines. From 1981 to 2011 she worked as an editor and art columnist for the newspaper Eleftherotypia.
She also worked for the state broadcasting corporation on the TV shows Provoleas (Spotlight, 1992-93) and Eikastika (On Visual Arts, 1993-96). Through her TV work, she undertook the creation of the film Contemporary Greek Artists, broadcasted by the B.B.C.
She has participated in international conferences on european art in Greece and abroad. Moreover, she has organized more than 30 thematic and monographic exhibitions in institutional sites, in Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete and abroad. She was the responsible for the greek participation in the Biennale of Sao Paulo (1991) and in the Biennale of Venice (1995 and 2011). She is a member of the Athens Daily Newspapers Publishers Association (ESIEA) and a member of AICA Hellas.
Following her proposal, the L. Kanakakis Municipal Gallery in Rethymno (Crete) was created in 1992. 50 representative works of the Rethymnian painter Lefteris Kanakakis as well as other works of contemporary artists which were donated by herself and her husband constituted the core of the Gallery. The Contemporary Art Centre based on Rethymno was created in the same site in 1994, with herself as art director (1995-2004). In 2004 she became Director of the newly established Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, which succeeded and completed the Contemporary Art Centre and the Municipal Gallery.
