Theodore Zoumboulakis, its founder, begins his entrepreneurial activity as a rare artworks dealer in 1912. The operation of the business as an art gallery initiates in 1960 at 3, Kriezotou Street in Kolonaki, where for the first time renowned artists of the ‘30s generation exhibit their works (Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Nikolaou, Moralis, Tsarouchis, et al.).
In 1966, Tassos and Peggy Zoumboulakis open their first contemporary art gallery at 7, Kriezotou Street, exhibiting Greek artists of the ‘60s generation, who then lived abroad (Akrithakis, Fassianos, Kessanlis, Tsoklis, Pavlos, et al.). At the same time, the gallery begins its cooperation with Alexander Iolas, who introduces key foreign artists to Greece.
In 1973, the activities of the gallery expand with a new, state-of-the-art venue of 450 square meters at 20, Kolonaki Square. The new space opens with an exhibition of the sculptor Takis, followed by Chryssa, who presents her sculptures for the first time in Greece. Simultaneously, it collaborates with well-known European galleries (Denise René in Paris, Beyeler in Basel, Gimpel in London). Major thematic exhibitions are showcased, such as the “Neorealist Movement”, curated by Pierre Restany, and the "Mirrors of the Mind", curated by Nicolas Calas.
In 1995, the Gallery acquires another venue at Pireos Street, where various cultural events and exhibitions of modern artworks with older objects take place, in an attempt to reconcile the old with the contemporary.
In 2000, Daphne Zoumboulakis becomes manager of the Kolonaki Square Gallery. Artists of the ‘80s and the ‘90s accompany the permanent ones, and since 2007, with the “Zone D” project, exhibitions take place off the galleries’ premises, in order to present the international trends in contemporary art.
Since 2007, a new space operates at 6, Kriezotou Street, “Art-Design-Antiques”, focused mainly on interior design aesthetics.
