The Epikentro Contemporary Art Space was founded in Patra in 1989 by Angeliki Antonopoulou and Gavrilos Michalis. The founders' aim was to provide a cultural hub away from the metropolitan centre.
The former 700-square-metre industrial facility of Agiou Dionysiou & 16 Norman St. hosted exhibitions mainly by Greek artists, either established or emerging practitioners who would go on to form the subsequent Greek art scene.
The
Concealment of Dimitris Alithinos, the
Ark of Tsoclis,
Hephaestus' Workshop by Thanasis Totsikas and the creations of Alexis Akrithakis, Yorgos Lazongas, Yannis Bouteas, Vana Xenou, Nikos Tziotis, Yorgos Hatzimichalis and others were some of the projects hosted by Epikentro.
Epikentro collaborated with the "Athens 2004" organization for the bid to host the Olympic Games (1997,
Medea by Tsoclis), with the Lefkada Festival, with the International Cultural Relations, with the Eureka and 3Μ companies, etc.
Epikentro completed its Patra cycle in 1995 and moved to Athens at no. 10 Armodiou St near the Varvakios Market, where it continued until 2000. After that, one of its founders went on to establish the a.antonopoulou.art gallery in the Psyrri area.
