Founded in 1995, the Rebecca Camhi gallery was initially housed in Sophocleous Street, on the fifth floor of an old building near the central market of Athens. It was a pioneering choice of location which promoted the cultural development of an area with no cultural life until then. In addition to exhibition facilities, the premises included a library, guest rooms and studios for visiting artists.
In 2008 the gallery moved to a neoclassical building in Leonidou St. in Metaxourgio.
The aim of the gallery all these years has been the best possible presentation of contemporary visual art internationally and the expansion of the Greek art scene through solo and group exhibitions of Greek and foreign artists. Major international aritists, including Nan Goldin, Ross Bleckner, Sean Landers, Rita Ackermann, Guy Limone, Tracey Moffatt, Bill Owens, Philip Taaffe, Sylvie Fleury, Karen Kilimnik, Julian Opie and Lily Ludlow, have exhibited at the gallery, and outstanding Greek artists have been represented abroad: Konstantin Kakanias, Deanna Maganias, Andreas Angelidakis, Angelo Plessas, Mantalina Psoma, Takis, Nikos Alexiou and others.
A major focus of the gallery’s activities is on participating in major international foires such as Frieze (London), Arco (Madrid), Art Basel (Basel), the Armory Show (New York), Art Brussels (Brussels), and the systematic participation in Art Athina.
In addition to its exhibition programme, the Rebecca Camhi Art Gallery hosts lectures, artist workshops, book presentations and other cultural events.
